چکیده

Frege’s Begriffschrift [3] introduced new levels of sophistication and complexity in logical syntax and its representation; its twodimensional nature has proved a stumbling block for those seeking to understand Frege’s ideas and his system. It is, however, merely a form of abstract syntax for a higher-order predicate logic, with proofs represented linearly and formulae two-dimensionally. Our work concerns the development of a Java and XML-based GUI for the interactive construction of formulae (and, in due course, of proofs) of this system, with output in concrete form such as LTEX. It is intended to make Frege’s notation more easily used and understood, and to illustrate XML techniques on a seriously challenging and unusual problem. End users will be Frege scholars; we plan to make the system available in due course as a web-based application either publicly or in association with a publisher.

On Frege’s Begriffsschrift notation for propositional logic: Design-principles and trade-offs

Well over a century after its introduction, Frege’s two-dimensional Begriffsschrift notation is still considered mainly a curiosity that stands out more for its clumsiness than anything else. This paper focuses mainly on the propositional fragment of the Begriffsschrift, because it embodies the characteristic features that distinguish it from other expressively equivalent notations. In the firs...

The Composition of Thoughts

Among the many innovations that mark Frege’s Begriffsschrift as a revolutionary work, perhaps the most important is its presentation of the first formal system of logic. Frege believed that the introduction of a new notation, especially for the expression of generality, was necessary if the logical relationships between contents were to be made apparent. This new notation made it possible, at l...

Truth in Frege

Tarski is widely regarded as the father of formal semantics, and rightly so. But if Tarski is the father, then Frege is the grandfather. Frege’s Grundgesetze der Arithmetik contains a semantic theory for his formal language, his begriffsschrift (or ‘conceptual notation’), that is no less rigorous than the one for the calculus of classes that Tarski develops in the early parts of “The Concept of...

Grundgesetze Der Arithmetik I § §29–32

Frege’s intention in section 31 of Grundgesetze is to show that every well-formed expression in his formal system denotes. But it has been obscure why he wants to do this and how he intends to do it. It is argued here that, in large part, Frege’s purpose is to show that the smooth breathing, from which names of value-ranges are formed, denotes; that his proof that his other primitive expression...

Frege on Identity and Identity-Statements: A Reply to Caplan and Thau∗

In ‘What’s Puzzling Gottlob Frege?’ Michael Thau and Ben Caplan argue that, contrary to the common wisdom, Frege never abandoned his early view that, as he puts it in Begriffsschrift, a statement of identity “expresses the circumstance that two names have the same content” (Bg, §8) and thus asserts the existence of a relation between names rather than a relation between (ordinary) objects. The ...
